It is possible to eat healthy during the holidays. Even with the multitude of parties and overabundance of food, you can achieve a healthy balance…with a little planning.

Incorporate these quick tips from The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ website, Eat Right’s article entitled, “Healthful Tips for Healthy Holiday Parties” and you will be good to go:

  • Start your day with a small meal that includes whole grains, fruit, vegetables and protein.
  • Don’t starve yourself beforehand. Rather, eat a small meal or snack so you aren’t tempted to overeat.
  • Don’t rush to eat. Socialize and settle into the festivities before you eat.
  • Savor foods you truly enjoy and pass up on those that don’t really interest you.
  • Move your socializing away from the buffet or appetizer trays. This will minimize the unconscious nibbling.

These tips are good for everyone not just people with dietary restrictions. However, how does a host prepare a party when the possibility of dietary restrictions loom? Diane Cookson, president of Manners for Life, Etiquette for Success says, “A good time to ask about dietary concerns is when guests respond to your invitation.”

To simplify the matter, as the host, add a simple line to the invitation’s RSVP, such as “Please list any dietary restrictions.”. It would unproductive to try and list all probable dietary restrictions on the RSVP. The suggested simple line shows you are a sensitive host, who has given your guest the opportunity to advise you of their dietary restrictions. The major thing, is to avoid making a guest feel uncomfortable at your party…having food to consume will make for an enjoyable evening by all.

Go celebrate, fellowship, and enjoy yourself during the holidays.
